ZUMBA added an extra burst of energy to a 24 hour sponsored sports event at Robert Smyth Academy.

The annual Lock in event saw 150 students from all year groups participating in 15 different sports to raise money for Adam’smile and future sporting events at the academy.

Students played dodgeball, football, hockey, netball, badminton, volleyball and also took part in an early morning zumba session hosted by coach Tracey Gardner.

The event was held on Wednesday, February 8 and at the beginning students paraded with team banners to get the competition started.

Overall the winning team were Adrenaline followed closely by Dragon and Watch and Learn.

Students baked Olympic and Paralympics themed cakes which they displayed at the start of the event.

Mike Scully, PE teacher at the Academy, said: “The behaviour and attitude of students throughout the event was fantastic and hopefully we will raise a lot for a very important local charity.

“I would like to thank all the staff that assisted at the event and local companies who supported the event - Actifwear, Sainsbury’s (for a very kind donation) Sarah Poli (Boboli and Firenzi restaurant) and Martyn Robinson.”

The event was a hit with pupils as well who said it was both inspiring and challenging.

Lorna Grubb, year 12 pupil, said: “It was a fun packed 24 hours with some brilliant activities, Zumba was a real highlight.

“Hopefully lots of money has been raised which was due to the hard work by everyone.”
