Care home improves but staff levels still an issue

IMPROVEMENTS have been made at a care home following a catalogue of failings outlined in a report last year.

But staffing levels remain an issue at Harborough’s Peaker Park Care Village, a new report by watchdog the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has concluded.

A CQC report published in July, based on the findings of an inspection carried out in April following concerns raised by relatives of residents at the home, found failings in all nine national standards of care.

The latest report, released last week and based on an inspection carried out in October, ruled the home met seven of the nine standards.

It failed on staffing and care and welfare of residents.

However bosses at Primelife, which runs the £11m home, says an number of improvements to staffing levels have been made since the inspection and have expressed disappointment the CQC did not take that into account.

The latest report says inspectors spoke to 20 people living at Peaker Park, who all spoke highly of staff. But some residents raised concerns about their availability.

Inspectors were told by staff at the home that residents often missed their mid-morning drinks and sometimes afternoon drinks because there were not enough staff to meet their needs.

Some residents were not able to get up until midday because there were no staff to assist them, with people having to wait in bed, sometimes having been incontinent.

Food and fluid records for three people looked at by inspectors revealed they had regularly gone without food and drinks from 5pm until 9am-10am the following morning, adds the report.

PrimeLife managing director James Wood said: “We are disappointed that the CQC has failed to recognise that prior to its latest inspection we had made significant and sustained increases to the numbers of nursing and care staff available on both our day and night shifts, and has also failed to recognise that our audit of documentation identified key actions for improvement.

“The process of updating same was completed in early November, a key point which CQC has overlooked and chosen not to acknowledge.”

Mr Wood also thanked staff for their contribution towards the improvements made.

“We are in no doubt that Peaker Park continues to offer the highest quality care delivery,” he added.
