Charity fundraiser sees children locked in for 24-hours of sport

Children took part in a 24-hour lock in at their school where they played sport in order to raise money for charity.

On Wednesday to Thursday of last week 140 students from Robert Smyth Academy remained in the academy overnight for the sixth 24-hour sports lock in.

The event, held to raise money for the Matt Hampson Foundation and sport at RSA, was opened by Matt Hampson and Craig Newby and was themed around Rio and Brazil in honour of the next Olympics, Paralympics and football world cup being held there.

Students, who work in teams, designed excellent banners for the opening ceremony and then participated in a number of events including football, basketball, netball, badminton, dodgeball, goal ball and volleyball.

In addition, there was late night skipping and relays before an early morning Bokwa warm up.

The students also had a go at samba and mixed martial arts. The winners were “Hugo Bosssin’ it” with “Pathetico Madrid” coming second and “The D Team” third.

Matt Hampson said: “It’s a great honour to know that we have the support from the Robert Smyth Academy.

“I think it was very relevant that the activities and exercise they did over 24 hours during the Lock-in for the Matt Hampson Foundation which aims to inspire and support young people who have been seriously injured through sport, So I am very pleased they are supporting the Foundation.”
