A BATTALION commander has called on Harborians to show their support for his troops by cheering them on when they march through town next month.

The 3rd Battalion, The Royal Anglian Regiment - nicknamed ‘The Steelbacks’ - will exercise their recently-granted freedom of Harborough by parading through town with their band playing, drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.

The event on Saturday, October 8, will welcome home 120 Territorial Army infantry soldiers who have been deployed patrolling the United Nations buffer zone in Cyprus.

Starting at 11.30am, it will set off from the top of High Street, marching to The Square, up St Mary’s Road and then along Adam and Eve Street to the district council’s offices.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Lyne said: “These fine young men have put both their lives and civilian employment on hold for a year in order to serve their country.

“So I now ask for the public to demonstrate their support and show that the people at home really do understand and appreciate the sacrifices they have made and will continue to make.

“Please take to the streets of Harborough to cheer them on.”
