College launches fresh studio school plan bid
Lutterworth College is renewing its bid to open a Studio School in the town.
The college wants to open the school on its existing site in Bitteswell Road, or on another site in the town.
Last year a similar bid was knocked back by the Government, but the college is confident it will be able to win through in its second attempt.
Studio schools focus on teaching students workplace skills, as well as academic studies.
Students aged under 16 are given a half day work placement every week while those aged over 16 do two days paid-work every week.
The college has already chosen a name for the new school – the Sir Frank Whittle Studio School – which it says is reflective of innovation and recognises Sir Frank Whittle’s development of the jet engine in Lutterworth.
The school would cater for about 300 students aged between 14 and 18 and would offer NVQs, BTECs and HNCs. It would specialise in engineering, hospitality and tourism and retail and distribution.
Students are also offered GCSEs and A-levels to give the option of studying a mixture of vocational and traditional academic courses.
Mr Cooper said he was very disappointed when last year’s bid fell down.
He added: “We had worked hard and we had made links with a number of companies in the Lutterworth area who were fully in support of the bid.”
Last year, Mr Cooper said despite the failure of the bid, one benefit of the process had been that the college had forged better links with companies in the Lutterworth area which had backed the bid.
He said that even though the college was leading the bid, the Studio School would be a new educational establishment in its own right with its own staff.
The Department for Education is due to make a decision later in the spring.
If successful, Lutterworth will be the third town in Leicestershire with a studio school.
