Community safety champion is to meet Pope
A NEIGHBOURHOOD watch stalwart from Harborough is set to meet the Pope. Marion Lewis has been invited to attend Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh next Thursday, when the Queen will be receiving the Pope.
Mrs Lewis, who is chair of the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network for England and Wales, was invited after her name was put forward by a senior Home Office official.
The event will mark Mrs Lewis's second Royal honour this year – in June she was awarded an OBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.
She said: "It's exciting. It's something I didn't expect.
"It's very much down to being the chair of the largest voluntary movement in the country and I'm honoured to be carrying that mantle with me.
"It has 7.9 million members – all of whom are volunteers who put themselves out for the safety of their community.
"I'm delighted that the movement has been recognised in this way."
Pope Benedict XVI is to arrive in Britain next Thursday – the first papal visit since 1982.
After attending Holyrood, he will celebrate Mass at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. The Pope is due to visit London and Birmingham during his time in the UK.
