Dealer gets five-year sentence

A DRUG dealer caught selling heroin in Harborough town centre has been given a five-year prison sentence.

Plain clothes police officers saw users queuing up to buy the Class A drug from 38-year-old Ali Din, Leicester Crown Court heard.

They ran off in all directions when the officers moved in, but Din was caught and found with 1,200 cash, while two of Din's customers had wraps of heroin.

An investigation proved Din had supplied the drugs and he was sentenced to five years in prison at the crown court last Friday.

The court heard how Din was caught in a police operation on September 22 last year when officers saw him dealing from a car park near School Lane in Harborough.

Detective constable James Bamber, who led the investigation, said after the sentencing: "We saw the local drug users almost queuing up to buy from him.

"When we caught him, he had no heroin on him, but he did have almost 1,200 in cash. That's a lot of money for someone who doesn't work."

Din was released on bail following the incident but was re-arrested a month later, on October 26, when he was found in possession of a knuckle duster-type weapon with a blade attached, as well as a small amount of heroin.

He was first due to appear at crown court on July 8 but failed to attend and was arrested before finally pleading guilty to all charges at a hearing on July 21.

He received a four-year prison sentence for supplying a Class A drug and six months for possession of heroin, to run concurrently.

For possession of the knife he received an eight-month jail term, and for failing to turn up to court got a further four months, both to run consecutively – a total sentence of five years in prison.

A further hearing will be heard under the Proceeds of Crime Act to determine if the cash found in Din's possession can be seized.

DC Bamber said: "This case shows we are taking positive action against drug dealing in Market Harborough – we will not tolerate their trade.

This sentence reflects the serious nature of drugs and the damage they can cause."
