STAFF at Harborough Leisure Centre and Lutterworth Sports Centre are keen to make a big splash by persuading as many people as possible to don their swimming gear in aid of a deserving cause.

The two leisure centres – in Northampton Road, Harborough, and Coventry Road, Lutterworth – are taking part in the annual Swimathon event on April 28-29 in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care and The Swimathon Foundation.

The team at Harborough is also planning to take on one of the five Swimathon Weekend 2012 challenges to raise even more money.

Swimathon, the world’s biggest fundraising swim, is getting bigger this year, joining forces with the British Swimming organisation and BBC’s Big Splash, Marie Curie and Sport Relief to promote what is hoped will be the biggest Swimathon weekend yet.

Karl James, wet-side duty manager at Harborough Leisure Centre, said: “It’s always fantastic to see local residents taking part and fundraising for charities such as Marie Curie.

“I’ve always found swimming a really good way to keep in shape. Everyone needs a challenge now and again, especially to keep motivated during the cold weather months. With the addition of Sport Relief this year, I’m sure it will be the biggest to date.”

The event will be hosted in around 600 pools across the country and will provide swimmers with a personal challenge, a goal to train for and great causes to support. The Swimathon weekend will also be the 25th anniversary of the event.

Model Jodie Kidd and London 2012 ambassador Duncan Goodhew launched the event last month (January) by swimming the first two lengths at London’s Oasis Sports Centre.

Swimmers have the option of taking on five kilometres, two-and-a-half km or a team five km challenge, or for the Sport Relief Big Splash Mile, individually or as part of a team.
