Fernie Hunt magistrates' court latest

TWO MEN from Great Bowden have appeared in court this morning to face hunting charges.

Kevin Allen (51), of Nether Green, Great Bowden, and Derek Hopkins (45), of Welham Lane, Great Bowden, both appeared at Harborough Magistrates' Court this morning (Thursday).

Both only spoke to confirm their name, address and date of birth, and to deny both charges put to them.

The men, who are inolved with the Harborough-based Fernie Hunt, were charged with:

*Hunting a wild mammal with a dog in Harborough (Thorpe Langton) on January 27 this year and that the hunting was not exempt under the Hunting Act

*Interefered with a badger sett by damaging it with intent or being reckless as to whether those actions would have that consequence.

The court heard the alleged badger offence could carry a sentence of imprisonment.

Defence solicitor Stephen Welford asked for an adjournment, saying there were seven DVDs totalling eight hours of footage amongst the evidence which needs to be looked at by the defence team.

The 15-minute hearing was adjourned to the Harborough Court on September 9 for plea and case management.

A trial is expected to last at leaast three days, the court heard.

Both men were granted unconditional bail.
