A SEA of Santas ran, walked and were carried around the streets of Lutterworth on Sunday in the third annual Santa Fun Run.

A grand total of 980 runners dressed in costumes and beards were out in force, only a handful short of the organisers’ target of 1,000.

Peter Osborn, from the Rotary Club of Lutterworth which organised the event alongside the Wycliffe Rotary Club, said; “The going was made easier, though less seasonal, as there was no snow on the ground this year.

“The sun shone and the almost 1,000 Santas enjoyed another unforgettable fun morning.”

The grand total raised at this year’s event will not be known until sponsor forms are all returned next year, although last year’s event, which attracted 780 people, raised £18,000.

Charities which will benefit from this year’s event include the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, Coping With Cancer Leicestershire and Rutland, the Lutterworth mayor’s appeal, prostate cancer charities, the Rainbows Children’s Hospice and a number of Rotary charities.

Mr Osborn added: “Particular thanks must go to Lutterworth Community Church for serving the welcome refreshments at the finish, to the Lutterworth Inner Wheel and others for the delicious mince pies and to Radio Lutterworth and the Lutterworth Town Band for keeping us entertained on the day.

“Such events also rely on the generous contribution of sponsors and a special ‘thank you’ must be given to ASDA IDC and Hinckley and Rugby Building Society for their outstanding support.”

A display of photos from the day is being exhibited at Lutterworth Town Hall on Saturday, December 10, between 10am and midday.
