Flats plan gets go-ahead at Ritz site

A DECISION allowing a plot of land in Harborough to be developed into flats has called into question hopes it would one day be the site of a town cinema.

Members of Harborough District Council extended a previous decision to allow the former Kwik Save site to be developed into shops and flats on Tuesday.

The issue of the cinema was raised but no discussion was had about it being a part of the site.

London-based firm Alislane, which owns the site, first gained planning consent to part demolish the building and turn it into flats and shops in September 2008.

But no work was carried out and the permission had been due to expire.

The 69-year-old Ritz closed in 1978 and was most recently a Kwik Save store. But it has sat empty since June 2005 and has turned into a major eyesore.

Several proposals to run the building back into a cineam stalled oer the next two years.

Planning applications by Alislane to turn the building into flats were submitted in April and October 2006 but both were rejected, with one proposal described by a councillors as looking like something from Disneyworld.
