YOUNG footballers netted a massive result with a fundraiser for a deserving cause.
Players from Harborough Town FC’s under-10s side, called the Rockers, held a charity event before Christmas.
The idea started when the team was asked to raise a bit of money for the club.
But when Cheryl Taylor, mum of team striker Luke Taylor, died of cancer last year they decided to run an event to raise money for cancer charities as well.
Friday, December 23, saw the team hosting a sell-out Christmas party for more than 150 people at the Bowden’s Park clubhouse. The profits from the event meant they not only raised £200 towards their own team expenses but a further £680 for Cancer Research UK.
Alongside the sales of tickets, the team sold more than 400 prize numbers for a cash prize draw. The numbers were drawn at the party and three cash prizes were given out. This left a profit of £1,800 to donate to county hospice charity Loros.
Luke’s dad Phil said: “We were astonished at people’s generosity in the run up to Christmas, and we are so grateful to everyone who bought a party ticket or a prize draw number. Cheryl would have been proud of us all.”
The cheques were handed over on Saturday to representatives of the two charities during a ceremony at the club after a team training session.
