Having a laugh for Comic Relief
Staff at Sainsbury's in Harborough prepare for their Comic Relief eating malteasers with chopsticks challenge
Businesses, schools and nurseries in the Harborough district are providing people with a laugh to raise funds for Comic Relief today (Friday, March 15).
Here is a round-up of what’s been happening this week and activities taking place today for Red Nose Day.
1 Staff at Adams and Jones estate agency in Harborough will be dressing up as the ghoulish Addams Family and throughout the week its senior valuer Matt Gladman has been going out to visits in various costumes including the Pink Panther and Alexander the Meerkat.
He said: “The response has been really good. Mainly people are laughing at me, which is the whole point.”
2 Staff from Harborough’s Sainsbury’s took part in a fire-walk over hot coals on Monday, raising more than £1,000 and among its activities today are a hot dog eating contest, a Maltesers chopstick challenge, a space hopper fundraiser, guess the number of balloons in the caravan, a wheelie wheelchair challenge and cracker eating contest.
3 Robert Smyth Academy in Harborough hosted a dodgeball event to raise funds for Comic Relief on Wednesday.
4 Barry Henning from Specsavers in Harborough will be wearing a tu-tu for a ballet event in Peterborough on Saturday.
5 Market Harborough Building Society is selling tickets for its Happy Hamper full of fun red treats to eat.
There is also a guess how many sweets are in the jar contest for children.
6 Lubenham Primary School is holding a Great Lubenham Book Bake-Off.
Children and adults have been invited to create a cake based on their favourite book.
Royal Wedding cake designer Fiona Cairns, of Fleckney, will be the judge.
7 Little Angels Day Nursery in Harborough has been running a Tommy Cooper comedy week with lots of laughs for the little ones.
8 At Harborough’s Waitrose staff have organised a variety of fundraisers all week including a guess-who-the baby-pictures-are competition, cake bake-off, and an auction for silence whereby which will see £5 donated to Comic Relief for every hour store manager Loretta Taylor manages to remain silent
9 Reporters and the advertising team at the Mail will be wearing red to raise funds.
10 Staff at soft play area and children’s party venue Mini Mischiefs in Harborough will be dressing up as red noses and superheroes. There will also be cakes and a best joke competition on its Facebook site with the winning joke read out over its PA system on Red Nose Day.
11 Leicestershire Craft Centre in High Street, Harborough, will be making decoupage red noses with its mini-makers pre-school children.
12 Bringhurst Primary is hoping to bake the largest Red Nose Day cake in the Welland Valley.
13 Solutions in Manor Walk, Harborough, will be selling home-made cakes while the Attic Room of East Langton is holding a baking contest.
