A teenager from Lutterworth who swapped a future in music for a career in the armed forces swore her oath of allegiance to the Queen at Leicester Town Hall last week.

Former Lutterworth College pupil Grace Adlerstein (17) was one of 31 young men and women from the county to swear the oath on Friday.

Daniel Clarke of Market Harborough also swore the oath.

It was one of the largest groups enlisted in recent years and is a combination of junior and senior entry soldiers, both male and female.

Grace had been studying music at the BOA Academy in Leicester but left after two months after realising she would rather pursue a career in the armed forces.

She will start 14 weeks of basic training on April 8 before specialising in vehicle mechanics during a futher 20-week-long training programme.

Performed in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Leicester Councillor Abdul Osman, last Friday’s ceremony was the formal enlistment procedure all new recruits undergo prior to becoming a soldier.

Captain Paul McGrellis head of Army Recruitment for Leicestershire said: “We are delighted to welcome these new recruits to the Army. I am sure that they will find it a challenging but enormously rewarding experience. The fact that we have 31 recruits joining a number of different regiments demonstrates the diversity of careers available in the Army today.”
