Man admits stealing sunbed from store

A DESPERATE man who lost his "dream job" because of his wife's illness stole a trolley-full of goods from a store for money to buy cocaine, a court heard.

Luigi Ruggiero (50) appeared at Harborough Magistrates' Court last Thursday when he admitted stealing 129.96 worth of goods from Homebase in Harborough.

Prosecutor Nikki Bennet said he stole a director's chair, sunbed, sunbed cushion and a side table on Friday, July 9.

Miss Bennet said Ruggiero was seen leaving with the goods out of the store's front door by a member of staff who then took his car registration number.

When questioned by police, Ruggiero made a full admission and said he was out of work and had stolen the items so he could buy cocaine.

In mitigation, Ruggiero, of Oakley Road, Corby, said he had lost a "dream job" as an educational assessor as he had to take time off work to care for his wife, who suffers from severe bipolar and needs constant care.

Ruggiero said his main problem was alcohol and that he turned to drink – and later cocaine – to try to cope with his problems. He apologised to the court and said he is now attending regular AA meetings and said he is now drink and drug-free.

"Getting caught gave me the jolt I needed to sort myself out," he said.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until September 16 so a probation report could be carried out.
