Mayor and wife win BBC quiz show

LUTTERWORTH mayor Tony Hirons did his town proud last Thursday when he and his wife took top spot in a BBC quiz show.

Mr Hirons and wife Sylvia appeared on Pointless, in which the winners are rewarded for their obscure knowledge.

Although the couple appeared on Wednesday, they were eliminated in the first round and invited back on Thursday, where they were the overall winners but failed to take the cash prize as they were not able to think of an obscure enough book written by the author Bill Bryson.

Mr Hirons said the programme was filmed last summer, only two weeks after he was elected as mayor.

He added: “It’s hosted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, and they are as lovely in real life as they appear on the show.”

Mr Hirons is no stranger to television quiz shows, having appeared on two programmes, 15 to 1, where he reached the final, and Crosswits, in the 1990s.
