Members agree social club's sale

THE PRESIDENT of an historic Harborough club says he is still optimistic it can be kept open.

Members of the town's Trades and Labour social club held a meeting on Wednesday last week to decide on its future.

The option on the table was whether to sell off the club to pay off debts or not.

Members voted in favour of the sale, but club president Terry Kennedy told the Mail this week that it is not necessarily the end for the club.

He said the favoured option for the club would be to find an investor to pay off the debts.

Another course of action could see the club sold as a going concern to someone who would retain it as a pub, said Mr Kennedy.

In the meantime the club remains open for business.

"It could be that the club comes to an end," said Mr Kennedy.

"But there are one or two options remaining. We're still optimistic it could stay open in some way. I'm still hoping someone can put money in to pay off the debts."

Formed in 1921, the club had more than 1,000 members in its heyday, but numbers have shrunk to around 300.

It used to occupy the building in High Street which is now home to Zizzi restaurant and the Jaeger clothes shop.

The club lost its High Street frontage after it sold that part of the building in 2004 to pay off debts.

It moved to the rear of High Street in 2006 but has been further hit by the recession in recent months.

A meeting of members was held in March to discuss the club's future after it was revealed it was facing 50,000 debts.

The club's committee has held talks with financial advisors but has failed to find a backer so far.

Mr Kennedy said: "People aren't using the club. The other week we had a brilliant Saturday, but then on the Sunday we took much less than usual. You just can't predict it."
