New group is launched for writers

BUDDING writers in the Harborough district are being invited to join a new group where their love of the written word and the joy they get from pushing the pen and hammering the keys can be shared and supported by all.

Ayleen Moffatt (60), of Jubilee Gardens, Harborough, is championing the group.

She is hoping to attract members who take pleasure rather than profit from their writing.

The group is set to be a democratic and supportive space where those who love writing can share their hobby.

It is hoped the group will be a place where adults can meet regularly to share their work and through the encouragement and support of the group, improve and develop.

Mrs Moffatt, who is a keen poet, is hoping the group will give others more confidence in their writing.

It will be open to all writers whether they enjoy penning poetry, letters, short stories, tales for children or even those attempting to pull together an archive of their family history.

The first meeting is due to take place at Harborough Library, in Adam and Eve Street, on Monday, September 13, between 7 and 8pm.

Though the venue will remain unchanged, Mrs Moffatt said it will be up to members to choose how often and when they will then meet.

The format and how the sessions will proceed is to be one of the topics discussed at the first meeting.

Though Mrs Moffatt is at the helm at present she is happy for the direction the group takes to be steered by all.

Members will be able to come and go as they please.

Lesley Sluman, a community learning development worker at Harborough Library, said the emphasis of the group will be on informal learning.

She added that people will not be required to take work away with them and all that will be needed to join the group is enthusiasm and an enjoyment of the written word.
