Pupils receive a Victorian education

A RETURN to Victorian school days saw pupils chanting the alphabet and times table as well as undergoing clean hand inspections and drill.
Children at Maidwell Primary School went back in time more than 100 years for the themed day.
Pupils wore Victorian dress and some brought their lunch wrapped in paper.
Lessons included still-life drawing and classroom monitors and an apprentice teacher were appointed.
All were commonplace in Victorian schools.
Teacher Judith Elliott said staff had even told pupils that they would have to go to the toilet in two buckets placed outside - though that fortunately turned out to be a joke. The event was held on Friday to mark the culmination of a term studying the era.
Head teacher Rosemarie James said: “The children have been studying over the last term the theme of Victorian times.
“They’ve looked at life at home and this was to show them what life would have been like at school.
“Since part of the school building is Victorian we decided to transform it into a school from that era. The children really enjoyed it and were extremely well-behaved.”
