Raise a mug or two for world's big coffee morning

THE GENTLE whistle of boiling kettles will be heard across Harborough district later this month for the annual World's Biggest Coffee Morning charity event.

On Friday, September 24, groups, charities and businesses across Harborough and Lutterworth will be joining the rest of the UK in hosting coffee mornings to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The charity provides practical, medical, emotional and financial support to people affected by the disease.

Its annual coffee morning has been running for 20 years and in 2009 saw 43,000 people register to hold a coffee morning, raising 7.9 million.

A spokesman for the charity said: "We want our supporters to do whatever suits them - and have fun doing it.

"Whether it's a traditional coffee morning at home, work or school, or something different altogether – a garden party, pub quiz, or karaoke night - the main thing is getting together with friends and knowing that your collective efforts are making a huge difference to people affected by cancer."

Some of the more bizarre record-breaking coffee mornings held over the last 20 years include the highest, held on-board a jet fighter in 2004, the most distant, in Antarctica in 2002, and the world's deepest, held down Poldark Mine in Cornwall in 2002.

The Mail would like to hear from groups or individuals in Harborough and Lutterworth hosting events of their own.

One group which has already been in touch with the Mail is Welland Place Retirement Village, based at the development built on the former Harboro Rubber Company site, off St Mary's Road.

Residents will be enjoying their coffee morning from 10am to midday in a bid to raise as much as they can for the cause.

If you would like to publicise your event in the Harborough and Lutterworth Mail, email alex.blackwell@harboroughmail.co.uk or phone 01858 436004.

The Mail's photographer will be out and about on the day taking pictures but will be unable to get to every event so we are also urging people to email us photos of their events.
