Richard III work sells for £7,000

A Victorian painting depicting Richard III in Leicester has been bought by the city’s university for £7,300.

The 1880 painting, by John Fulleylove, exceeded the £3,000 estimate when auctioned at Gildings in Harborough on Tuesday.

The picture shows the king outside the Blue Boar Inn, setting out to meet his fate at the Battle of Bosworth.

The University of Leicester said it plans to put the painting on display.
