Road deaths total is at a historic low

DEATHS on the roads in the Harborough district have reached a record low, according to new County Hall figures.

Statistics released by Leicestershire County Council last week show that five people lost their lives in the Harborough district in 2012 – the lowest since records began in 1979.

It is only the fifth time since 1990 that the figure has been in single digits.

It is less than the previous low of six fatalities in 1998 and considerably fewer than the highest total of 25 recorded in 2002.

The county council cabinet member for transport Lesley Pendleton said: “It is encouraging to see the number of deaths on our roads reach this record low but we must not be complacent.

“It is deeply saddening to hear of any fatality and five deaths in the Harborough district is still five too many.

“We are working hard with our partner organisations to try to reduce road fatalities and casualties.

“While we are in challenging financial times, we remain committed to the ongoing improvement of our roads and the continued development of our driver education and training initiatives, particularly with young people.

“However, there is only so much we can do and we need all road users to drive responsibly and considerately to help reduce accidents further.”

This record low was reflected across the Leicestershire.

A total of 27 people lost their lives in Leicestershire, which was also the lowest since records begin.

This is fewer than the previous low of 36 fatalities in 2009 and considerably less than a high of 67 fatalities in 2002 and the previous highest total of 91 in 1981.

The figures come in advance of Leicestershire County Council’s Annual Casualty Report, which will be published in April.
