A CLOSELY-fought schools’ swimming gala saw a new winner crowned.

The annual Harborough Primary Schools Swimming Gala was held before Christmas at the town’s Welland Park College.

Students from the college helped to run the event, which has been held since 2006, and a new winner came out on top this year.

Teacher Hazel Stephens, from champions Harborough CofE School, said: “We started out always finishing near the bottom but in last few years our team has got stronger and stronger and finally achieved second place in 2010 - two points behind winners Meadowdale.

“This meant the children were very determined to win this year for the first time ever. We got off to a flying start with Yasmin Flint (Year 6) making the front crawl look easy and storming to first place - she swims for Leicester City.

“After that, we kept up a great pace with lots of children being placed. It got very exciting and tense as it was very close with Meadowdale again this year - only seven points in it at the end. It was great to achieve first place and hopefully, even though our very successful Year 6 children will have left next year, we will still have lots of strong swimmers for the 2012 gala.”

Children from Harborough CofE, in Fairfield Road, won seven individual races and four relays.

Pupils compete in the front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke and relays. Schools enters eight teams from Years 3 to 6.

The event is organised by Marise Taylor, the school sports co-ordinator at Welland Park College.
