Scout chosen for trip of a lifetime
George Billington
A teenager from Harborough district has been chosen to represent the UK at an international scouting event in Canada later this year.
George Billington (17), of Foxton, will join 5,000 other scouts from across the world at the 14th World Scout Moot in August.
It will see him take part in conferences, workshops and outdoor activities including an expedition challenge in Outaouais Forest 75km north of Ottawa.
George said: “I am looking forward to going to Canada immensely and feel proud to represent UK scouting abroad.
“The chances to experience other cultures and do activities that I have never done before, in an amazing landscape is definitely something I’ll never forget.”
The Scout Association said George was selected because of his energy and enthusiasm for international scouting.
It said that George showed a desire to learn about different cultures and ways of living and has a hunger for adventure.
A Moot is an international gathering of scouts between 18 and 25 years of age.
The 14th World Scout Moot will take place in Canada for the first time, from August 8 to 18, bringing together up to 5,000 young adults from around the world.
The camp will be located at the Awacamenj Mino outdoor Base in Low, Quebec.
However, some events will take place in cities including Montréal, Quebec City and Toronto.
Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “Congratulations to George for being selected to go on this trip of a lifetime.
“While lots of people know that scouting is all about adventure, they often don’t realize that adult volunteers get to do just as much as our young members through their involvement.
“The World Scout Moot in Canada is the best example of this.
“Over the course of the Moot they will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light.
“I wish George all the best and I know he is going to have an amazing time.”
More than 200 activities are offered by scouting around the UK, made possible by the efforts of more than 94,000 volunteer leaders.
One of the challenges faced by the movement is finding more volunteers.
