Shopmobility move to new base in town
Shopmobility charity workers and service users, who are moving to Settling Rooms from their old base at the council offices. A POPULAR service that has made shopping easier for countless elderly and disabled people in Harborough is moving its base in the town.
Shopmobility, which was previously based at Fox Yard behind the offices of Harborough District Council, is having to relocate due to the refurbishment work happening at the council headquarters.
It will now be based at The Settling Rooms on the Sainsbury’s car park where it will no longer have its notable portable cabin for storage of mobility scooters.
The people behind the independent charity, which has operated in Harborough for more than 12 years, see the move as an exciting opportunity which will give it greater visibility in town.
Shopmobility scheme coordinator Sharron Muggleton said: “This is an ideal location for us and very safe for customers with all areas of the car park linked by zebra crossings.”
The aim of the Shopmobility scheme is to promote the welfare and independence of people with impaired mobility, reducing their isolation from society in rural and urban locations, especially for those who are without the resources to provide their own equipment.
It achieves this through providing a variety of wheelchairs and mobility scooters which can be hired, for a donation, to users who are registered with the scheme.
Charity chairman Martin Ellingworth said: “We are extremely grateful to the assistance we have received from the district council in finding suitable accommodation to cope with our somewhat unusual needs.
“I would also like to thank The Cube youth centre for agreeing to vacate The Settling Rooms before their new site is ready.”
Shopmobility will close on Tuesday and then reopen at the new site on Tuesday, January 22.
Opening hours will be 9.30am to 3.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9.30am to 3pm on Fridays.
