A GROUP founded to knit and stitch hats, scarves and quilts for good causes has celebrated its first birthday.

The Lutterworth Knit and Stitch group meets on every first Thursday of the month between 2 and 4pm at Lutterworth Methodist Church.

The group was created a year age when two previously separate groups, one which made quilts for children being treated in hospital or living with their mums in women’s refuges, and another which created environmentally-friendly bags for shoppers, decided to join forces. They named the group Lutterworth Knit and Stitch.

Linda Hill was the organiser of the quilt-making group, which was formerly known as the Linus group and made quilts for children.

She said: “The idea for the group was that we could get lots of people together who enjoy knitting and stitching and we could make things which help good causes.

“So, we make quilts for the Linus organisation, we knit the small hats which go on the Innocent Smoothie bottles and help raise money for charity and we have also made tiny hats for babies in neo-natal units.”

Mrs Hill said the group has about 15 to 20 regulars who meet every month at the Methodist Church.

She added: “People of any ability are welcome to come along and either learn more or just help out.

“There are some who come along just to do ironing or make drinks – it is as much of a social group as anything else.”

The Knit and Stitch sessions are free.

The group is currently appealing for anyone to donate old wool or materials to be used to make quilts.

For more information about the Lutterworth Knit and Stitch group, or if you have old materials which you can donate, phone Linda Hill on 01455 556498.
