Town’s iconic plane is saved
The iconic Sir Frank Whittle replica aeroplane monument at the gateway to Lutterworth has been saved for posterity.
The future of the structure on the Rugby Road roundabout was in doubt as a group needed to come forward to take on maintenance costs.
It is a memorial to the life and work of Sir Frank, who developed the jet engine in town.
Agenda papers for Harborough District Council’s executive meeting on Monday show that County Hall is due to step in to save the day.
Ownership of the full-scale replica lies with the district council but maintenance was the responsibility of the Sir Frank Whittle Commemorative Trust. The trust announced in 2010 that it was winding up and said it wanted a third party to take on the upkeep or to remove it. The trust lodged £2,000 with the council to cover costs of removal.
However, agenda papers this week show that Leicestershire County Council is proposing to take up the costs via a sponsorship arrangement.
A county council spokesman said: “We are talking to Harborough District Council about the future maintenance of the replica.”
The meeting, which is open to the public, is at the Lutterworth Sports Pavilion in Coventry Road at 5pm.
