TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular Lutterworth butcher who died last month after a short battle with cancer.

Rob Gooch (43) had worked at W F Chapman Butchers in High Street, Lutterworth, for about eight years.

He died on January 12.

Stuart Chapman, who worked alongside Rob almost every day, said he would be ‘very much missed’ by customers and colleagues.

He added: “Rob was a really good bloke.

“He worked very hard and always did a good job here.”

Mr Chapman said Mr Gooch had always got on well with customers and was very well-liked.

He added: “Even though he was ill he didn’t want to let anyone down.

“His last day here was on Christmas Eve. I’d been telling him to finish for a while but he kept saying he didn’t want to let me down and that I’d need his help over Christmas.”

Mr Gooch lived in Rugby with his wife Bev (42).

He had been diagnosed with cancer only a short time before his death and had suffered with back problems for a while before the seriousness of his condition was realised.

Mrs Gooch said: “He always put others first.

“Rob didn’t complain once, he just made sure he said his goodbyes.

“He was so laid back, he didn’t let any thing get to him. He will be remembered for his smile and good sense of humour.”

Before joining Chapman, Mr Gooch worked for Terry Aucott’s butchers in Rugby and the Meat and Livestock Commission.

He followed rugby and enjoyed watching England games. He was also a special police constable and had been involved with the police force for ten years.

Mr Gooch had two daughters, Kim (21) and Kelly (18). Kim is due to have a baby in June and Mr Gooch had seen early scans of the baby before he died.

His funeral took place at St Marie’s Church in Dunchurch Road, Rugby, last Tuesday.

Mrs Gooch said: “The church was packed for Rob’s funeral and we would to thank everybody. We’ve been overwhelmed with people sending cards and messages.”

Rob also leaves mother and father Pam and Austin Gooch, brothers Andrew and Vincent and sister Maria.

Donations have been collected in Rob’s memory. They will be presented to Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Nurses.
