Trustee vacancies at Harborough volunteer centre

An appeal has been issued to fill vacancies on the board of trustees of a Harborough volunteer centre.
Vacancies have arisen at Voluntary Action South Leicestershire, which is based at The Settling Rooms in the Sainsbury’s car park, off Springfield Street.
VASL provides services, supports community groups and builds partnerships to meet community needs.
Market Harborough has a long tradition of volunteering over many years, with a Volunteer Bureau being established as a charity in 1987 and South Leicestershire Council for Voluntary Services (SLCVS) being set up in 1993. Both organisations were largely funded by Leicestershire County Council and Harborough District Council.
In April 2007, SLCVS and Market Harborough Volunteer Bureau merged to become Voluntary Action South Leicestershire, creating a single organisation to support and bring together volunteers and community groups.
Voluntary Action best described the aim of both groups then, and it’s still what VASL is about today. The merger brought together a number of local services including community transport, befriending for older people and information and support for carers.
Since 2007, it has expanded its services and provides more and more support to people in the Harborough district and throughout Leicestershire. Its work is funded by many different trusts and foundations including organisations like the Big Lottery.
It became a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee in April 2011 to help further its aims and make it more sustainable, ensuring its services continue to meet community needs, even in challenging financial times.
A three-year strategic plan to 2015 is firmly embedded in the organisation and VASL aims to be the lead third-sector organisation in the Harborough area, providing services, supporting community groups and building partnerships between funders, service providers and other voluntary sector organisations.
The trustees role is unpaid but wthey do get paid out-of-pocket expenses. It is ideally looking for people with knowledge and experience of the health and social care arena or those with marketing and communications experience in that sector or the business and environment field.
All potential trustees need to be able to commit time to attend bi-monthly board meetings and the trustees are encouraged to join at least one sub-committee and participate in joint working groups with staff.
Applicants need to submit a CV complete with a short skills audit.
