Villages unite to oppose airfield office block plan

CAMPAIGNERS from six villages have rallied together to oppose a new countryside office block development.

Planning permission has been granted for the three-storey complex at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground and Airfield, near Lutterworth.

However, members of Against Bruntingthorpe Airfield Noise Disturbance or Nuisance (Abandon) say the project, which is due to begin within the next two months, is ill-conceived.

A member of the group from Peatling Parva, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Why would anybody want to build offices in this field when there’s clearly no other nearby infrastructure to support it.

“There is no possibility of anybody getting there other than by car and the county council have concerns about the amount of traffic going through the villages already.”

Abandon is comprised of around 100 members from Bruntingthorpe, Gilmorton, Kimcote, Mowsley, Peatling Parva and Walton.

The member says the group has complained about a number of alleged planning infractions by the Proving Ground in the past.

However, he hopes the two sides will be able to open up a dialogue over the residents’ concerns about this development.

He said: “Our experience is that they get on and do what they want regardless of the impact on residents.

“There are quite big concerns and the community aren’t happy, but we’re fairly weak in terms of being able to do anything about it.

“They’re not going to go away and we can’t be complete NIMBYs about this so we want to achieve some sort of a compromise.

“We’d like to have them as our neighbours acting like a responsible business and taking into account everybody’s concerns, not just their own.”
