Volunteer Ben’s war on litter

A YOUNG volunteer helping to keep our streets clean is urging others to join him in his battle against litter.

Ben Williams (19) has been helping Harborough Improvement Team’s (HIT) Environment Group in their Love Where You Live campaign.

The project encourages volunteers to take responsibility for improving the cleanliness of an area in their neighbourhood, and aims to raise awareness about preventing littering.

Ben, who has helped keep Northampton Road and Farndon Road tidy, said: “I volunteered because I was fed up with people throwing their rubbish and making a mess. There is a big team of people and we’re trying to get people to put their litter in the bin.”

The Love Where You Live campaign started last year after the group received funding from Leicestershire County Council’s Community Forum Budget and the Harborough Lions group.

With the help of further funding from HIT and Harborough District Council, the group now has 25 sets of litter picking equipment.

The group, which meets every three months, is next due to get together at the café in Welland Park on Saturday, February 2.
