Welland Park Academy in Harborough is developing international links with India as part of a major new school twinning project to boost global education.
The school was chosen to take part in the Connecting Classrooms education initiative run by the Government and the British Council in recognition of its commitment to teaching students about global issues.
The programme has seen three teachers from Welland Park – Sarah Kenning, Debbie Edwards and Deviya Dholakia – take part in an exchange visit with the Snehalaya School in India to work on classroom-based projects.
Students from both schools got to know each other ahead of the trip by posting pictures and comments about their everyday school life on an online blog.
Welland Park pupil Liliana Veneziale said: “I have really enjoyed looking at all of the photos that they have posted on the blog, and have learnt how lucky we all are to have the things that we have at school, for example they don’t have tables and chairs so they have to work on the floor.”
Miss Kenning said: “In 2010 I spent six weeks volunteering in the school at Snehalaya. When I heard about the connecting classrooms grant, I thought it would be an ideal opportunity to use the existing relationship that I had established to link our two schools together.
“Since October 2012 we have introduced the student blog and have started to discuss proposals for further collaborative projects and potentially a residential trip to India. It is all very exciting to see two completely different worlds coming together over the shared commitment to improve education.
“I think it is really important for pupils at Welland Park to get to know other children in the global community.
“Sometimes children’s ideas and views are limited, but with an international partnership they have the opportunity to broaden their outlook.”
Secretary of state for international development Justine Greening said: “I am very pleased that Welland Park has taken on this excellent opportunity to link with schools in other parts of our world.”
