Three candidates will battle it out for a seat on Harborough Council following the resignation of Cllr Brian Smith.
The Conservative councillor stepped down from his seat as ward member for Husbands Bosworth, sparking a by-election set for Thursday, November 7. The candidates contesting the seat were confirmed this week as Conservative Lesley Anne Bowles, Liberal Democrat Annette Deacon, and former Lutterworth mayor Bill Piper, representing UKIP.
Mr Smith, who as council chairman helped welcome the Queen to Leicester Grammar School in Great Glen in 2008, said: “I’ve enjoyed it and I shall miss my fellow colleagues. But after my mother died I came to the conclusion that life was finite and there are things that I want to do while I’m still able.
“I thought this would be an ideal time to step down. It will give someone younger a chance to get their feet under the table and get to know the patch.
“I’ve been a councillor for ten years so I think I’ve done my stint.”
