Charity festival brings rockin’ time to the Rec

Rock on the Rec is making a rollicking’ return for its fifth outing in a fortnight’s time in Market Harborough.

The free fundraising event, which is backed by Voluntary Action South Leicestershire’s Rural Youth Voice project, Enable Youth, the Cube youth centre and town music tutoring firm Room for Music, is returning to Symington’s Recreation ground, off St Mary’s Road, on Friday, August 15.

The organisers believe this year’s event will be the best yet with the young performers coming from across Harborough district to perform.

Sian Ponting, a Rural Youth Voice project worker, said: “I am really excited about this year’s event – it is the fifth year we’ve put this on, and it will be the last time I am involved in this brilliant day.”

In addition to the live music, there will be a selection of free music and arts workshops on offer by Room for Music, Soft Touch Arts, and Circus Skills. The county fire and rescue service will also be there to raise awareness about road safety.

Families and young people are encouraged to come along, and are free to bring food, picnics and deckchairs, although hot food and refreshments are also available. The event is a strictly alcohol-free zone.

Sian added: “The team have been working really hard, and this year we are putting things in place to ensure the future of Rock on the Rec – the whole team, and particularly the young people involved, have been absolutely brilliant.”

This year the group is working in partnership with Seven Locks Housing, which is running a family fun event at the same time, with activities including bouncy castles and multi-sport sessions.

Bands this year include Tapestry, Red Orange, Ascend the Skies, Chewing Daisies and Monstrous D, with spaces still available for under-25s acoustic acts.

The live music is due to get under way at about 4pm.
