A live BBC Radio 2 concert to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day is to be screened live in Harborough.

After tickets for the D-Day concert at The Royal Albert Hall were sold out, the BBC will now broadcast the event live by satellite to cinemas and cinema-equipped theatres nationwide on Friday, June 6.

In Harborough, the event will be screened by Octagon Films at Harborough Theatre on a large screen, in high definition and with surround sound.

It will allow D-Day veterans and their families who are unable to travel to London to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day together.

The BBC will be giving profits to The Royal British Legion, SSAFA and SkillForce.

In a similar charitable gesture, Octagon Films will top-up any profit from the event to create a pool of £1,000 for donations to local Forces-related charities and support organisations, and will make a number of free seats available to local D-Day veterans.

Mike Lee, from Octagon Films, said:“If anybody was actively involved in D-Day, and lives in Harborough or the Bowden villages, or if anyone knows somebody who was involved, please get in touch.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for veterans, with a carer or a companion, to experience this event. Free tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and please remember, although there is a lift to the auditorium, there is only one wheelchair position.”

For more details, call Peter Mitchell on 01858 466234 or John Taylor on 01858 463519.

The concert will re-tell D-Day’s key moments alongside actors led by Patrick Stewart as Winston Churchill. Music will come from the BBC Concert Orchestra, a military band, Beverley Knight , the Military Wives choir and Katherine Jenkins, who will sing a virtual duet with Dame Vera Lynn.
