The council has come under heavy criticism for the way it has set its precept - which saw a 400 per cent increase - and spent money with ‘minimal consulation’ with residents.

Now residents will vote on Thursday, June 9, on whether they feel the council is serving the electorate as well as it should.

Desborough resident Kevin O’Brien said: “There are 8,000 people in Desborough who can vote and 2,000 signed the petition.

“That’s 25 per cent of the electorate at least.

“If you’ve got that many people saying that they are not happy then something needs to be done.

“This doesn’t mean we want to get rid of the town council.

“We just want them to engage with the people who live there.

“They believe the town wants to spend all this money but they’ve not spoken to us about it.”

Three polling stations will be open, at St Giles Community Centre, Loatlands School and The Grange Leisure Centre.

Voting hours are 4pm to 9pm with the count and result being announced at The Grange.

Voters will need to go the polling station they were asked to go to for the recent police and crime commissioner election, where each polling station will have an electoral register to check in at.

There will be no polling cards sent out to homes in the town.

Ahead of the town poll, there will be a meeting held to debate the issue at 8pm on Tuesday, June 7, at The Ritz in Station Road.
