An ultra marathon runner is setting off this week to take on a tough six day 156 mile run to raise money for an animal welfare charity.

Sue Warnock (49), from Billesdon sets off on Friday to take part in the Marathon Des Sables to raise funds for the Brooke.

Psychologist Sue will spend six days running the 156 mile distance across the Sahara Desert in temperatures of up to 50’C while carrying all of her own provisions on her back.

Each day she will have limited water supplies and only basic sleeping facilities.

Sue said: “I’ve been training and preparing for this for the last two years, but now the date is almost here I’m getting a bit nervous.

“It’s for a great cause though - I’m a keen traveller and it breaks my heart when I see the horses, donkeys and mules that work in such hard conditions.

“This challenge will give me just a taste of what it’s like for them every day.

“The Brooke is a charity really close to my heart and I hope the money I raise will help them continue vital work.”

Sue said that she has always loved horses and has supported the Brooke for a number of years. The charity helps working equines in the world’s poorest communities.

Sue has been a fan of ultra- marathons for some time and as part of her training for the Marathon Des Sables she has completed seven other ultra-marathons in the last year, racking up an incredible 560 miles.
