A group that encourages women to breastfeed and supports them to do so has had a revamp thanks to its “meals on heels” campaign.
Babies and Bosoms (BABS) in Harborough meets at the Children’s Sure Start Centre in Coventry Road and was launched in the summer.
A breastfeeding group did existat the centre previously but it has been given new life after the launch of the Meals on Heels campaign which encourages women to breastfeed and to feel at ease with doing it in public.
The new group is structured unlike the former group which was on a drop-in basis.
Women attending the group will be informed about a different topic regarding breastfeeding each week.
There will also be the opportunity for women to speak to each other and offer each other advice, support and tips that they have found useful.
Health worker Penny Ely, who is one of the group leaders, said: “It is a group where they can get specialist advice and mums can get support from other mums and the idea is to help them continue with breastfeeding.
“Breastfeeding can save £150 a year, it can reduce obesity in children, asthma and eczema.
“There are so many health benefits.”
As part of the Meals on Heels campaign there is a website, www.leicspart.nhs.uk/infantfeeding and a smartphone app.
The app includes a section where women can rate cafes and restaurants where they feel most comfortable breastfeeding.
The campaign has been spearheaded by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and Leicesteshire County Council.
The campaign’s infant-feeding leader Carol Fishwick said: “We know many mothers find breastfeeding to be a challenge. Meals on Heels is all about helping women to feel empowered, with useful resources, a website and an app.
“We want women to continue to feel good about themselves, and not see breastfeeding as a barrier to their self-esteem and confidence.”
Penny added: “It is a lovely friendly group.”
The group meets between 11.30am and 12.30pm on Wednesdays.
It is also open to antenatal women.
