A Harborough supermarket is holding an event next week to celebrate its parent organisation’s 150th anniversary.

The town’s Waitrose store, off Springfield Street, is hosting a Partnership Day featuring food tastings and a free prize draw on Friday, July 4.

Shoppers can also hear more about what it is like to be a partner in the business.

It is being organised as part of the John Lewis 150th anniversary celebrations,

Waitrose joined the John Lewis group as a chain of 10 specialist food shops in 1937 with the first supermarket opening in 1955.

It opened a branch in Harborough in September 2012.

John Lewis calls all of its staff partners and they “co-own” the business and share in its profits.

John Spedan Lewis opened his first drapery shop in Oxford Street, London, in 1864, and formed the partnership in 1929, making all its employees co -owners and partners.

The organisation now has 31 department stores, 10 home & garden stores, a shop at Heathrow Airport, 319 Waitrose supermarkets and an online and catalogue business.

The partnership has more than 91,000 members who own 42 John Lewis shops, the website, a production unit and farm, and share in the benefits and profits of the business.

A Waitrose spokesman said: “Over the years our partners have stayed true to Waitrose’s beginnings, combining the convenience of a supermarket with the expertise and service of a specialist shop.

“We have worked with producers and growers, pioneering local and organic products and championing sustainable sourcing, to build a network of 319 shops known for the freshness, quality, safety and provenance of the food we sell.”

The event in Harborough next Friday will feature free tastings from its deli range and other goodies and a free prize draw where shoppers stand a chance to win a food hamper.

Staff will also be on hand to talk to people about becoming new partners.
