Two Harborough district shops sell alcohol to underage girls

On Friday April 15, local police conducted an alcohol test purchasing operation on 10 off-licences in the Broughton Astley and Lutterworth area.

The premises were visited by two 15-year-old female volunteers who tried to buy alcohol without any form of identification.

Out of the 10 premises, eight passed by asking the teenager to provide photographic identification and refusing her service when this couldn’t be provided, however two did sell her alcohol.

Sergeant Mark Williams of Harborough Police said: “I am pleased to see that eight of the premises passed the test and asked our young volunteer for ID. However it is disappointing to see that two premises failed the test.

“It is important that people serving alcohol are vigilant and challenge anyone they feel they may not be old enough to buy it. It is always better to be cautious and ask for ID if you are ever in doubt that a person may not be old enough.”

The two premises that failed the test were given words of advice from police. Further operations are planned to take place this year.
