A Gartree Prison officer wowed X Factor judges and a crowd of thousands during auditions screened at the weekend.
Sam Bailey received a standing ovation from judges Gary Barlow, Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger during an audition shown on Saturday night, before winning a similar reaction from a 4,000-strong crowd at Wembley Arena on the Sunday.
Interviewed on Saturday’s programme before her first audition, she said: “I work as a prison officer and when I’m at work a lot of the staff tend to take the mickey out of me for singing all the time.
“I think I’m a bit old for it now but I have to at least try haven’t I?”
After getting the thumbs-up from all four judges on Sunday, Sam is now among the favourites to take this year’s X Factor crown.
Ratings for this year’s X Factor were up after more than 9 million people tuned in to watch the show’s return.
Saturday night’s launch show pulled in an average audience of 9.2 million - 500,000 more than last year’s debut.
The ratings, which also include people watching on +1, show a peak audience of 10.3 million.
