A housing association has started building work on a £4.4m development in Harborough for 45 affordable homes.

It is the first of two developments in town, costing a total of £5.7m.

Spire Homes, which is predominantly based in east Northants and Rutland, is developing its first homes in Leicestershire across two sites in Harborough.

Work on the £4.4m scheme off Farndon Road has already started and will provide 45 affordable homes by 2016.

They will range from one- and two-bed flats and maisonettes to one, two and three-bed houses.

The second development will cost £1.3m and is set to begin later this month off Lathkill Street, comprising 14 two- and three-bed affordable homes.

Both developments will have properties available for intermediate rent and shared ownership.

Spire Homes director of housing services Katy Sagoe said: “We’re very excited to be delivering our first new homes in Harborough.

“Our priority is making affordable housing available to those who need it and we are pleased to have the opportunity to work in new areas to provide quality homes for local people.

“Having listened to what the local housing needs are, we’ve incorporated a number of different property types and are offering both below market rent and shared ownership to help people find a beautiful new home they can afford

“Our reputation for high-quality homes and services is something we’re very proud of and we will be working very hard over the coming years to establish this in Market Harborough.”
