A NEW course record made it a memorable day at Kibworth GC when they hosted the opening county PGA pro/am tournament of the winter series.
Clive Fromant fired a course record 6-under-par-65 in winning the pro medal by three strokes from Tour pro Matthew Cort of the home club.
Host club professional Bryn Morris, Simon Wood (Scraptoft) and Matt Whelband (Charnwood G and CC) were all on level par 71, sharing third, with two on 72 – a new PGA Midland Order of Merit champion Craig Shave (Whetstone) and Ian Lyner (The Leicestershire).
Fromant started on the 7th tee in the shotgun round. Highlight of this card was an eagle at the 7th hole on the course where he hit 3-iron and 4-iron to 20 feet and slotted the putt. He also had birdies at the 5th, at 14, 16 and the last, where he just lipped out for an eagle there.
He said: “My son Jake is a member of Kibworth GC, so he will be thrilled I managed to score so low. We had played a few holes together the evening before the pro/am.”
Fromant and his amateur partners Guy Swindell, Steve Taylor and Martin Towers also won the team top spot with their 16-under-126 aggregate, three ahead of the field.
Morris, with amateurs Mike Abbott, Peter Bolton, Paul Watson were runners-up on 129, with a tie on 130, when Lyner took third with Roy and Steve Nightingale, Graham Moore on countback from Whelband, fourth, with Margaret Pay, Joy Farrier, Fred Darroch.
The previous record at Kibworth for a pro was by Paul Broadhurst in 1991 just before he left for the USA for the Ryder Cup match at Kiawah Island. The course is now 200 yards longer.
l European Senior Tour professional Bob Larratt (Kibworth) shot 3-under-par-70 to tie top in the pro medal at the county golf Alliance tournament at Forest Hill GC. He tied with Clive Fromant (Clive Fromant Golf Academy), who came in with his 70 card a short time earlier.
This is a new pro record for the changed and lengthened course.
They won by a stroke from three tied on 71 – Kieran Thomas (Ullesthorpe Court), Bryn Morris (Kibworth) and Ian Lyner (The Leicestershire), who shared third.
Amateurs Kevin Barnes (Charnwood Forest) and Nick Arden (Lingdale) topped the overall leaderboard for the better-ball event after a tie on 63 with Fromant and Nathan Tabor (Scraptoft), runners-up.
Scraptoft assistant pro Joe Beatty and Rob Moreton, with 64, took third and fourth went to Lingdale pair John Hollis and Clive Patrick after a tie on 65, resolved on Alliance rule.
Thomas and Rob Middleton (Hinckley) also carded 65 and took the pro/am section prize, while the am/am award went to John Carruthers and Chris Bott (Glen Gorse) with their 66 return.
There was a field of 112 - a record for an Alliance meeting at Forest Hill.
l Several season-long tournaments at Lutterworth GC have been completed.
