Bidding to be 'The Champ'

A NIGHT in front of the telly started Gareth Ford's kick-boxing career.

Now the 27-year-old steps into the spotlight himself after being handed a crack at the English championship tomorrow (Sat, May 8).

Five years ago, Ford was at home in North Kilworth watching the Ultimate Fighting Championship on television.

On Saturday, he will meet Colin Herd in Basildon for the vacant WAKO English light-welterweight championship – and should be well prepared for the five-round fight.

He has been training six days every week and also trains members of the PKA gym-based group at Harborough Leisure Centre.

Ford fits his training in around working for Gemini Auctions in Hinckley and the former semi-contact Grand Champion said: "I just love the sport. I love competing and the belt's coming home with me."
