Big match Saturday - part 2

HARBOROUGH Town hope another bumper crowd will head to Bowden's Park this Saturday.

A record crowd of 430 fans saw Micky Adams' Port Vale run out 3-0 winners in last weekend's historic pre-season friendly and Forest Green Rovers are the visitors on Saturday (3pm) as the countdown continues to the start of the United Counties League Division One season.

Forest Green are preparing for their 13th successive season in the Blue Square Premier Division where their rivals for a spot in the Football League include Kettering Town and Rushden & Diamonds.

They can expect a tough workout against Town following last week's impressive showing against Port Vale from League Two.

Town had never previously faced opposition from the Football League and more than held their own in the opening half hour.

Danny Wright, last season's top scorer, had the ball in the net, but the celebrations were cut short when the effort was ruled out for a push.

Alex McMillan was a constant threat to Vale with his darting runs from midfield and crosses, while Martin Callan was a towering presence at the heart of Town's defence and pulled off a spectacular goal line block.

It took a special effort to get past Town keeper Luke Maher.

Eight minutes before the break, Anthony Malbon, a teenager with a prolific scoring record for Vale's reserves, walloped home a spectacular shot from 20 yards and two minutes later, Sean Rigg doubled the lead.

Both sides made changes at the interval and again, Town got themselves into several promising positions without managing to find the finishing touch and Sam Morsy showed them how it's done after 72 minutes when he lashed a rising shot into the roof of the net.

Maher saved well from former Leicester striker Louis Dodds to deny Vale a fourth goal.

Meanwhile Town's fixture against the Leicester Legends has been rescheduled for Sunday, August 29 (3pm).
