A TEAM of students from Lutterworth College have been crowned the county cross-country champions after a sterling winter effort.

The girls’ team from the college, which takes in students aged 14 to 16 in Years 10 and 11, won the Leicestershire and Rutland Schools League Championships after coming out on top in a cross-country competition which runs from October to January.

College PE teacher Dominic Lane said: “The girls took part in six races over the winter.

“Their team and individual times are all recorded and Lutterworth came out on top to win the trophy.”

Lutterworth College hosted one of the races for this year’s event, while others took place in the Harborough and Melton areas.

The courses are normally between three and four kilometres and the races take place on Saturday mornings.

Mr Lane said: “The teams don’t do training in PE lessons, instead we link up with Lutterworth High School and have a regular weekly training session.

“We usually go running around the Rye Hills area as that prepares them for the sort of terrain they will normally be racing on.”

While the team took the overall top spot in the competition, the individual efforts of Year 10 student India Mitchell-Jarvis were also recognised as she took the county runners-up medal for the best overall individual scores across the six races.

Mr Lane added: “It was a very impressive effort from the whole team, especially as they give up their time at the weekend to represent the school.”

The college also has a boys’ team which took part in the inter-schools competition.

Lutterworth College’s triumph in the cross-country competition follows hot on the heels of a similar success recorded by younger pupils at Claybrooke Primary School in December.

The school’s Year 3 and Year 5 teams took honours in the primary school equivalent competition.
