Dozen rewarded for top commitment
A DOZEN runners have been rewarded by Harborough Athletics Club for their commitment and dedication in cross country running events this year.
The special accolades were in memory of Bill Alexander, a former club chairman.
Alexander was an athletics person through and through and was eager to see as many people as possible from the community getting involved in cross country running activities.
The recipients of the awards were drawn from different categories after a lot sifting of results from many events.
The focus of the criteria was not necessarily the best runners, rather their commitment, such as in bad weather conditions.
Selected for the men’s senior award was Adam Brooks, an upcoming running enthusiast, followed by star runner Pete Swaine and Andy Robinson.
Since the competitions, Swaine has left the club to join Charnwood, where he lives, although he is a born and bred Harborough athlete.
Will Clapp, a keen cross country runner, received the veterans’ award, along with Martin Hughes and the hardened Shane Edge.
Hughes is one runner in particular who the running bug seems to have caught up with and is seemingly always out racing in club colours.
As if to show it runs in the family, the senior women’s special award was given to Lianne Brooks, sister to Adam.
Promising teenager Martha Clapp and Sarah Ward were the junior women recipients.
Lin Farrow came tops in the women’s veteran award, followed by her sister Karen Brooks and Lynette Lewington.
Dave Oram, standing in for Dick Callan, club chairman, presented the awards to the deserving athletes on Tuesday last week, before the start of the usual evening training sessions.
Meanwhile, the Prestwold 10km race had Ady King finishing 145th in 40mins 40secs, Shane Edge was 158th in 41mins 22secs and Martin Hughes 265th in 45mins 07secs.
In the third part of the |Peterborough 5km series, Yvonne Barber finished 193rd in 28.16, Hayley Whiteman 196th in in 28.41, Jackie King 199th in 29.21 and Anne Knights 209th in 34.14.
