Singles club!
A WELCOME case of deja-vu saw leaders Harborough Town complete a season’s double over third-placed Rushden.
A single goal was enough to clinch the United Counties League points at Bowdens Park, just as it was in the away game.
Third-placed Rushden were on a good run of form, despite smarting from their defeat by Town earlier in the campaign.
However Harborough kept their unbeaten home league record intact thanks to another narrow victory.
Manager Stan Wilson had made several changes to the starting eleven and changed the formation to “freshen things up”. Will Arnold, making his reappearance at centre midfield was the stand-out player for the home side.
Harborough started brightly and played some entertaining football with half-chances falling to Rob Barnett and Danny Wright.
Their luck changed soon after the break when Barnett tangled with the keeper and was brought down. Left-back Tom Robson smashed home the resultant penalty to settle the issue.
Rushden stepped up their game and the hosts had to withstand a barrage of corners and attacks. Keeper Luke Maher made several superb saves including one low to his right post, tipping the ball away when a goal looked certain.
Harborough held on to claim the three points, keeping them at the top of the division one table, two points clear and with a game in hand over Huntingdon – who visit Bowdens Park for a crunch encounter this Saturday. All supporters will be welcome (ko 3pm).
Desborough Town were just two minutes from picking up three vital UCL points from their home match with Blackstones on Saturday when a late equaliser dampened their spirits.
The premier division bottom-markers had been given the luxury of a first-half lead thanks to a rocket header from a visiting defender, but in the end had to settle for a point after wasting several good chances.
The reserves kept up their good form, bringing back all three points from their encounter at Wellingborough, despite playing for most of the game with ten men after their keeper was sent off. Matt Redding got the all-important goal.
This Saturday the first team entertain Irchester United while the reserves visit Peterborough Northern Star.
