Generous golfers give boost to Adam'Smile

GOLFERS took part in a tightly-contested tournament in aid of a deserving cause.

It was the third leg of the ten-event Adam'Smile Golf Championship, which started in March and runs until December.

The series, which has received tremendous support from the Harborough business community through sponsorship, is attempting to raise 10,000 for Adam'Smile appeal – a fund aiming to build a safe cycle route between Lubenham and Harborough in memory of 13-year-old Adam Mugridge, who died while cycling to school from Lubenham in 2006.

The most recent tournament, on May 28, was the Cooper Estates Open at Kibworth Golf Club. Nearly 50 players took part in a 3/4 handicap stableford format in teams of four.

The podium places saw Richard Wright, of sponsors Coopers and a Kibworth GC member, take first place but, as a sponsor, he kindly stood down – leaving Andy Reuthe to claim top spot.

Dave Goodman was runner-up and Andy Simpson third.

Nearest-the-pin on the third hole, sponsored by Ascough's, was won by Pete Moore, nearest-the-pin on the 15th, sponsored by Da Vinci, was won by Michael Edwards and the longest drive on the tenth hole, sponsored by Duncan Murray Wines, was claimed by Andy Simpson.

The Blade Runner Trophy, for best-placed 28-handicaper, was won by Gareth O'Hara with his top-ten finish. His prize was a free golf lesson from Kibworth GC's resident pro, Bryn Morris.

Organiser Mark Cowley said: "It was a tightly-fought contest with the top 20 all within five points."

Sponsor John Cooper said he thoroughly enjoyed the day and donated a 500 cheque directly to the charity.

The next event is The Three Swans Championship at Stoke Albany today (Thursday).
