GOING UP?

A RECORD Bowdens Park crowd saw Harborough Town crowned league champions – the culmination of their amazing late-season feat of winning ten games on the trot.

And Town's magnificent title achievement took on extra significance as they have received the news that promotion to the United Counties League is a distinct possibility if they are able to meet certain ground and clubhouse requirements.

If approved, such a move would see them playing at a level never before achieved by a Harborough Town side.

Their last game of the season saw visitors Khalsa provide the final hurdle and, given the Corby side's indifferent form of late, Harborough's hopes were high.

And the match got off to the perfect start from Town's perspective – Alex McMillan scoring their quickest goal of the season after only 35 seconds.

The early strike settled any Harborough nerves and they went on to dictate play with long spells of possession and numerous scoring chances.

However it took a Khalsa slip-up on the half-hour to bring goal number two. A sloppy challenge in the box gifted the home side a penalty, which skipper Tom Robson calmly put away.

The second half again saw Harborough dominate with the lion's share of the ball, although numerous chances to put the game to bed were spurned. Youngsters Barnes Gladman and Ryan Goodband were used as subs to try to inject more energy up front but Khalsa defended well and the scoreline remained at 2-0.

Jubilant scenes followed as the Northants Combination premier division trophy was presented to Robson and his squad.

Harborough Town seniors and veterans club presentation night is to be held tomorrow (Friday) at 7.30pm at Bowdens Park.Tickets cost 5, to include a buffet and disco.
